Fight Like ApesIrish newcomer band Fight like Apes explain the origin of their band name and reveal the name of their most famous fan.

Please tell us something about your band name. What’s so special about the way apes fight?

Our name is taken from the movie “Battle For The Planet Of The Apes”. At one point Caesar, an ape general shouts: “Now Fight Like Apes”. We knew we had to steal it. We liked the implicated violence in it I guess. It also sounded very instant, something you wouldn’t forget. How do apes fight? According to that movie, very badly, very camp and very cheesy. In relation to us? We tend to use a lot of wrestling moves and throw a lot of things.

You’ll soon be touring Germany. Is there anything you are particularly looking forward to?

I’m just looking to go there period. I’ve never been to Germany before so i’m extremely excited! I’ve heard it is way less expensive than Ireland so that sounds good. I’m also looking forward to the fact that you can get glass bottles of Coke on the street. You can’t get that here and I’m Cola obsessed. I’m also looking forward to sampling some bratwurst.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of the band?

Shouty, spikey synth-pop. Folklore for couch potatoes!

Some of your songs have rather peculiar titles such as Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues or Snore Bore Whore. Where do you get the inspiration for your lyrics and titles from?

From day to day occurrences I guess. It’s very spiteful music. Theres a lot of hate and anger in it. It can sometimes be sweet but always in a misleading way. We are obsessed with trash culture; things like bad 90?s TV  shows, kung fu movies, zombie movies and pro wrestling. So there’s a lot of references to that sort of thing. There is also a fun element to it. I guess anything goes in the songwriter department. ‘Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues’ is a cover of a Mclusky song by the way.

Which was the most memorable moment for you (happy, sad, whatever) with Fight Like Apes?

Probably meeting The Prodigy when we toured with them last year. It was surreal. Liam Howlett up to us and told us he loved our band; to which we could only reply “we love your band too”. You don’t get many chances at a first impression and that was a particularly poor one even by our standards! Meeting someone that has in someway shaped your youth musically doesn’t happen too often and you’d think we could have come up with something better to say than that!
